Align Your Team Around the Growth Mindset

December 13, 2021 Jamie Notter

The growth mindset is an approach to leadership that is rooted in learning and adaptation. If you don’t have an answer for something, the growth mindset assumes that you can discover one. This stands in contrast to a fixed mindset, which assumes that answer is out of your reach or beyond your capacity. A growth mindset is curious and wants to work the problem; a fixed mindset wants to change the subject to something for which it already has an answer.

In 2022, your entire team needs a growth mindset. I don’t know, of course, exactly what 2022 is going to look like, but I can confidently predict it is going to present you with challenges for which you do not have solutions. That part of the last 2 years is not going away. And the difference between thriving and hanging on by a thread in this environment lies in how quickly your team can come up with new solutions, which is driven by their mindset.

To be clear, this is not about smarts. I am sure your team is extremely intelligent and deep experts in their areas, but that does not immunize them from the fixed mindset that defaults to what they know, rather than what they can discover. Our growth mindset course (and now workshop) helps leaders avoid that trap. In the first unit of the course (that focuses on the individual growth mindset), there is a lesson on “competing commitments” that helps leaders identify their own internal contradictions that are holding them back. In the second unit (team growth mindset) we dig into specific strategies for increasing both trust and speed at the team level, as well as managing conflict more effectively.
